Khmer Buddhist Bronze Ritual Bell, Dated Eb 2397 / Ad 1854, Cambodia, 19th Century

A finely cast Cambodian (Khmer) bronze Buddhist ritual bell with deep, untouched patina. The baluster handle is surmounted by a squatting guardian figure—arms crossed over the knees, wearing a crown and earrings—seated upon a lotus base. The bell shoulder carries a scrolling decorative band, and the original clapper is preserved.

Around the lower body runs a hand-cut Khmer inscription. The numerals read ២៣៩៧ (Buddhist Era 2397), corresponding to A.D. 1854. The adjacent letters are the remains of a donor or temple dedication (partially rubbed). Such inscribed bells were temple offerings, their resonant sound used to accompany prayers and dispel negative energies.

• Condition: age-consistent wear; minor abrasions and encrustation; inscription partly rubbed; clapper present and functional
