Rare and fine elephant ivory okimono, depicting a man seated on a wooden box, drinking from a gourd with a long, winding pipe coiling into several loops.
Description
The richly detailed figure wears a garment decorated with finely incised and tinted designs, his bare feet resting on a circular base. The scene vividly illustrates the daily life and humor characteristic of Meiji era sculptures.
The finesse of the work can be seen in the details of the expressive face, the folds of the kimono, and the decoration of the box featuring wood grain.
