Kiseru Zutsu - Kinko Sennin With Carp - Deer Antler - 19th Century
Wari Zutsu (or one-piece pipe case) in deer antler with carved relief decoration of Kinko sennin.
The latter was a sage who spent two decades painting fish. One day, the king of fish appeared to him and took him to the underwater world. A month later, he returned to his disciples on the back of a carp, telling them never to kill fish again, then immediately dove back into the river from which he appeared. It is his artistic activity and his riding which are represented here on this pipe case, in a dynamic sequence.
