Red Lacquered Desk With Matching Chair, China, 19th–20th Century

Chinese desk made of brick-red lacquered wood, featuring four drawers along the front with openwork metal half-moon pulls, resting on square-section legs joined by a wide, low openwork shelf. The back of the drawer band is left unfinished. Accompanied by a chair made of red-lacquered wood with gilded accents and a curved, openwork backrest. The central panel of the backrest features two relief-carved medallions on a red lacquered background; one is adorned with a foliage scroll motif, and the other depicts a lively scene of a scholar and his assistant. The solid, square-sectioned seat rests on a straight base joined by crossbars, topped at the front by a low, discreetly cut apron.
