Description
The cross is inlaid in the same style, with a clear contrast between the dark fillets and the warm tones of the tortoiseshell.
Christ on the cross, finely carved in fruitwood (probably walnut), is depicted in an expressive posture,
with a bowed face and prominent ribs, typical of the 17th-century Italian Baroque aesthetic. The work is lively and expressive, particularly in the treatment of the scrolled perizonium and the wavy hair.
The base, with stepped canted sides, rests on four small turned feet. This complex plinth, with its inverted pyramidal architecture, evokes certain Neapolitan or Roman models of the late Baroque.
