19th Century Russian School : "death Of Alexander"

Malinin (Russian School of the 19th century): "Death of Alexander", oil on paper 28.2 X 43.5 cm, mounted on a cardboard 30 X 44 cm. In its original condition, trace of crease, scratches, missing right side.
Bears a red stamp with the date February 9, 1879, an illegible hollow inscription below and the signature in Cyrillic still on the handle of the brush in the still fresh paint at the bottom right.
Treated as a sketch of great virtuosity, the setting of the scene with laurel wreaths of the victor hanging on the wall or on the breastplate and the incense burning in a cauldron or on an Athenian is deliberately dark, focusing attention on the hero whose body lies on a couch, a weeping woman accompanied by a child kneels beside him, men who have come to watch over him looking to the left.
