Italy19th century: “Frontispiece to Salvator Rosa’s Self-Portrait,” pen-and-ink drawingon very fine paper, 13.5 × 12.5 cm (irregular), mounted in thecorners with small tears and stains on a brittle and incomplete cardboard backing.
Probably a draft frontispiece for a biography of the artist; itshows a soldier dressed in 17th-century style, seen from the back and holding a portraitframed behind various attributes: a book, a snuffbox, etc.
The drawing is an interpretation of the self-portrait found in the Vasari Corridor in Florence.
