Portrait Of A Young Girl, Oil On Canvas, 54 X 45 Cm, Black And Gold Frame
Artist: Eugène Vincent Vidal
Eugène Vincent Vidal, a French academic painter, distinguished himself through his delicate portraits of women and refined Orientalist scenes. A student of Léon Gérôme, he exhibited regularly at the Salon starting in 1873, where he was acclaimed for the grace of his subjects and his technical mastery. In 1880, he participated in the fifth Impressionist exhibition—notably with a portrait of George Sand—demonstrating his eclecticism and openness to the artistic movements of his time. This portrait of a young girl, veiled in diaphanous fabric, embodies the full subtlety of Belle Époque academic painting. Vidal’s fine brushwork evokes the softness of skin, the airy transparency of the veil, and the subtle melancholy of a gaze turned inward. The silky rendering of textures and the suggestive treatment of certain areas lend the work a Symbolist aura, defined by restraint and elegance. Vidal was a rare artist, capable of navigating between the rigors of the academic Salon and the innovations of the Impressionists. Certain portraits—such as *Woman in a Pink Corset* or *Young Girl Seen from Behind Wearing a Hat*—recall the works of Mary Cassatt through their sensitivity and modernity. His works are held in several public collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours, and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. A signature style that combines remarkable painterly quality with Symbolist poetry.
