A rare and finely crafted 19th-century betel or tobacco box from Palembang, South Sumatra, measuring 10.5 cm in width. This elegant piece is made of silver-plated copper and features intricate hand-engraved geometric and foliate motifs, characteristic of the region’s refined metalworking tradition during the Dutch colonial period.
The lid is adorned with a striking diamond-shaped suasa (gold-copper alloy) inset, richly decorated with delicate scrollwork and applied gold domes—providing a beautiful contrast to the silver-toned body. The box’s faceted octagonal form is both utilitarian and decorative, reflecting the aesthetic values of Palembang’s elite society.
An exceptional example of 19th-century Indonesian craftsmanship with colonial influences, this piece would have been used to store betel or tobacco and remains a culturally significant collectible.
