Object description :

"Rare Regulator Signed Verneuil - 3-month Power Reserve"
Rare skeleton clock with a very large power reserve. The whole mounted on a sea green marble base. The body of the clock composed of the two plates forming the movement resting on four gilt bronze spinning feet. The first wheel, that of the barrel, of a very large diameter thus allows for a large power reserve. The dial in white enamel, Roman numerals for the hours, a first railway for the minutes on the outer rim. A second railway for the indication of the seconds punctuated by enameled gold dots for the indication of the half-seconds. It bears the signature of Verneuil. Blued steel hands. The whole encircled by a gilt bronze bezel with a so-called "roulette" decoration. The movement's gear train arranged vertically and completely visible. It is equipped with a pin escapement with a large central escape wheel with a traversing axle directly carrying the seconds hand. Heavy thermally compensated balance wheel known as a "grill" formed of brass and steel rods arranged alternately to play on their expansion property. Metal suspension. Verneuil, a mechanical watchmaker, is mentioned in Tardy's Dictionary of French Watchmakers, was established in Paris at 42, rue Saint Honoré. He specialized in this type of regulator, the style of which is well recognized. Our model fits perfectly into his manufacturing lineage. By its construction, but also by the desire to offer the regulator user great precision combined with a significant power reserve. More generally, this type of timepiece experienced a real craze at the very end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. Two similar models are presented in "The Encyclopedia of the French Clock" by Kajberg. In addition, a very similar model also signed Verneuil was part of the sale of the Guy Dierckx collection at Aguttes lot 24 on June 7, 2023.
