The portico-shaped clock rests on a rectangular base with four pilasters adorned with gilded bronze. The upper part features a central dial enamelled with Roman numerals and signed by Thonifsen. The movement is flanked by gilded bronze dragons.
Thonifsen
A watchmaker in the early 19th century, he practiced on rue Mandar from 1806 to 1820 and on rue de la Comtesse d'Artois in 1830. His work is held in major collections.
Literature
This type of clock is a staple of early 19th-century watchmaking. Every discerning collector owns at least one. Several examples are reproduced in "L'Encyclopedie de la pendule Française, Pierre Kjellberg, Les éditions de l'Amateur, 2005".
Condition report:
A few small chips to the marble, one asparagus missing. The movement has been overhauled by the previous owner. It will nevertheless need to be adjusted.
