Coquelin senior (1841–1909), whose real name was Benoît-Constant Coquelin, was a great French actor of the 19th century. A member of the Comédie-Française since 1860, he excelled in classical roles, notably those of Molière. He is best known for having created the role of Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand in 1897. Renowned for his diction, his intensity and his versatility, he also performed abroad, notably in Russia and the United States. Brother of Coquelin junior, also an actor, he embodies a major figure on the French theater scene.
