Allegory Of Science - Charles Gumery - Bronze With Patina

Artist: Charles Gumery(1827-1871)

La Science is a work by French sculptor Charles Gumery (1827-1871), who personifies science in the guise of an idealized female figure. The statue depicts a seated woman, adopting a noble, poised attitude, embodying both mastery of knowledge and intellectual rigor.

The treatment of the body, inspired by classical antiquity, highlights balanced proportions and a timeless ideal of beauty. The finely crafted draperies follow the forms, creating a subtle play of folds that enliven the sculpture's surface. The face, calm and concentrated, expresses reflection, rationality and the quest for truth.

This work is fully in keeping with the context of the 19th century, marked by an unprecedented scientific boom, where art celebrates progress and human intelligence. It thus offers an allegorical vision of science, perceived as an enlightening force guiding mankind. The monumental version of this sculpture now stands in front of the courthouse in Chambéry, Savoie.

Charles Gumery, a French sculptor associated with the academic movement of the 19th century, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was part of the classical tradition inherited from Antiquity and promoted by official education. He is best known for his monumental decorative works, in particular the allegorical groups adorning the façade of the Palais Garnier in Paris, where he created symbolic figures such as L'Harmonie and La Poésie.

His career, though promising, remained relatively brief, as he died prematurely at the age of 44. Despite this, his work fully participated in the aesthetics of the Second Empire, a period during which monumental and decorative art occupied a central place in public space.
