Large Bronze Salamander Dish - Renaissance Style, Napoleon III Period
Important patinated bronze dish, bowl-shaped, made during the Napoleon III period in the French Renaissance taste.
The piece is richly adorned with historiated decoration referring to the reign of François I.
The basin is centered by a salamander in flames, the sovereign's personal emblem, finely chased in relief.
The wing is decorated with an extensive ornamental program blending fleurs-de-lis and coats of arms with the coat of arms of France, in a highly accomplished heraldic spirit.
The handles, treated in high relief, are formed of griffin figures and grotesque heads, typical of the Renaissance decorative vocabulary revived under the Second Empire.
Very fine quality of casting and chasing, with a homogeneous antique patina.
Work characteristic of the historicist revival of the 19th century, particularly appreciated under Napoleon III for his marked taste for the Renaissance.
A spectacular decorative piece, both iconic and unusual.
