This is an important oil on canvas dating from the first half of the 18th century, depicting a man in theatrical costume, wearing a feathered hat, a large red cape over a white-checked doublet edged in blue, and a book in his hands.
Perhaps he is also a playwright!
The face is rather round with a thin mustache, and the gaze is turned to the right, with a slight squint, fixing the viewer.
A very jovial man, the painter has managed to give this portrait a slightly caricatured and perhaps slightly humorous aspect.
A very lively and spirited portrait, funny and amusing, full of life!
A southern work.
