The Birth Of Venus – Important Italian Sculpture In Marble And Alabster, Circa 1920–1930

A spectacular sculpture in white marble and alabaster depicting the Birth of Venus.

The goddess is depicted emerging from a massive open shell, the base of which is framed by two fantastical dolphins. In a dynamic pose, Venus has one knee forward, while a raised arm accentuates the composition’s vertical momentum.

This work stands out for its particularly decorative combination of two stones with complementary effects: dense, finely polished white marble is used for the figure of Venus, while the shell and the dolphins are carved from light, translucent alabaster. The light passing through the shell delicately highlights its radiating ribs and gives it a remarkable presence.

The face with its idealized features, the wavy hairstyle, the slender form of the body, and the stylized dolphins place this sculpture within the neoclassical tradition, revitalized by Art Deco aesthetics. It is likely an Italian work created around 1920–1930.

A rare, luminous, and particularly captivating composition, whose mythological subject and prominent shell naturally evoke Italian Renaissance depictions of the goddess’s birth.

Condition:

In good overall condition given the fragility of the work. Previous restorations to several fingers and one toe. A small chip above the snout of the dolphin on the left and some slight chipping along the edges of the shell.

The sculpture must be placed on a suitable pedestal or stand to ensure complete stability.
