In the 19th century, the male academy was a central exercise in artistic training, representing a male nude from a live model. It aimed at mastering anatomy, proportions, and modeling, in an ideal inherited from Antiquity. Painted or drawn, it favored codified poses and neutral lighting. Artists such as Ingres, Géricault, and Bouguereau considered it an essential part of their training.
