The Three Graces In A Landscape, Early 19th-century French School

In the foreground of this small oil-on-canvas painting, three Graces are conversing; two of them are listening to the one seen from behind. They are unclothed, with fabrics concealing their nudity.
In the second plane is a ruined building, overgrown with dense vegetation, and in front of it, two tiny figures.
Above the scene is a beautiful sky filled with summer clouds.
In the third plane is a mountain range bathed in the setting sun.
All of this on a surface measuring 14.5 x 20 cm! The painter, from the early 19th-century French School, has created a harmonious composition spanning multiple planes with beautiful depth. And what’s more, everything is finely painted—from the bodies and hair of the Graces to the fabrics, the judges, the sky, and so on.
The gilded wooden frame, weathered by time, is a later addition. It is sumptuous and lends grandeur to this lovely neoclassical mythological scene.

The Three Graces—known as the “Charites” in Greek mythology and the “Graetiae” in Roman mythology—are said to be the daughters of Bacchus and Venus.
They are said to bestow upon human beings a balanced temperament, grace, eloquence, wisdom, and so on. They are depicted as young and nude or draped in light fabrics.
