Decorative Earthenware Dish - Burmantofts Earthenware
Circular decorative Burmantofts faience dish, featuring the profile of a young page modelled in relief and enhanced with a rich, glossy brown glaze. This piece was produced by Burmantofts Pottery in Leeds, England, in the late 19th century.
Founded in 1859, Burmantofts Pottery is renowned for the exceptional quality of its glazed stoneware, initially developed for architectural use before being adapted into decorative objects. From the 1870s onward, the manufactory created refined ornamental works — dishes, vases, jardinières and sculptural pieces — distinguished by their deeply nuanced glazes and strong sculptural presence.
Drawing inspiration from the Arts & Crafts, Neo-Gothic and Orientalist movements, these works combine technical mastery with artistic ambition. Today, Burmantofts pieces are highly sought after for their elegance, rarity and significant place in the history of British decorative arts.
