Salvator Mundi After Puget - Front Side Of The Mold From The Rmn Casting Workshop
A significant plaster bust depicting Christ as Salvator Mundi, based on the original work by the Marseille sculptor Pierre Puget (1620–1694), housed in his hometown at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, located in a wing of the Palais Longchamp in Marseille.
This is the face of a mold used starting in 1882 by the Casting Workshop of the Museum of Comparative Sculpture (1882–1928). This mold is coated with a layer of shellac, an agent that facilitates demolding, which gives it this slightly yellowish tint. The more the mold is used, the darker the resulting casts tend to become.
Given the lightness of its color, our copy appears to have been used only rarely. This plaster cast thus serves as a moving testament to the history of sculpture, offering a faithful reproduction of a masterpiece. The casting workshop indeed guaranteed great precision and remarkable quality in its plaster casts.
