Self-portrait - Charles Sénard (1878-1934) - Charcoal On Paper
Artist: Charles Sénard (1878-1934)
Charles Sénard (1878-1934). Self-Portrait.
Born on August 17, 1878, in Caluire-et-Cuire (Rhône) and died in the same town on August 4, 1934, Charles Sénard was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where he proved brilliant but also, according to his contemporaries, "undisciplined." Shortly before the First World War, he gained recognition for his charcoal drawings and engravings, deeply influenced by Symbolism—his works addressed themes such as crowds, war, and death, often with a somber style.
After 1925, he actively participated in Lyon's artistic life: he became president of the Salon du Sud-Est from its inception, and then, in 1933, curator at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
His output is varied: still lifes, bouquets, decorative compositions, as well as etchings and wood engravings. He is still relatively unknown to the general public but appreciated by specialists in early 20th-century Lyon art.
Charcoal drawing, signed and dedicated lower right.
Dimensions: H. 40.5 cm - W. 29.5 cm
