Laocoon - Large Fiberglass Bust - After Antiquity

Important fiberglass bust of Laocoon, depicting one of the most tragic episodes in Greek mythology. This sculpture, with its powerful modeling and dramatic details, particularly in the tormented face and muscular tension, is one of the great canons of ancient statuary. In Greek mythology, Laocoon, a Trojan priest, is one of the main protagonists of the Trojan Horse episode. As the Greeks feign their departure by abandoning a huge wooden horse presented as an offering to Athena, Laocoon warns the Trojans against this ploy and urges them to destroy the object. Just as he sacrifices a bull to Poseidon to back up his warning, two snakes emerge from the sea. They first attack his two sons, embracing and dismembering them, before turning on Laocoon himself, who is desperately trying to save them. After their attack, the snakes take refuge in Athena's temple, coiling at the foot of her statue. The Trojans then interpret this event as a divine sign: they believe that Laocoon has been punished for questioning an offering to the goddess. Reassured, they bring the horse into the city, sealing their fate.

Important fiberglass bust of Laocoon with imitation bronze patina. Probably made for a decor. Modern work. Hole in shoulder and traces of use, with light surface wear.
