Vienna (1820 - 1830)

Table clock

Ebony wood and gilded bronze, 31 x 20 x 12 cm

Table clock in ebonized wood with applications in gilded bronze, of architectural shape with serpentine handle that starts from the top. It has a curved case with a metal-plate dial with roman numerals for the hours and arabic numerals for the minutes, as well as a double hole for the charge. At the corners it is framed by vegetable friezes in gilded bronze, symbol of the renewed naturalism that involves the Viennese manufacture at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The manufacture of watches was a huge success in Austria between 1820 - 1830: with the crisis after the fall of Napoleon, some forward-thinking statesmen decided to look to other countries for their technical innovations, Finding in the production of Swiss watches a new artistic product where the population could engage to make profit.
