Georg Jensen – Oval Service Tray #2E, Blossom / Magnolia Collection, Sterling Silver, Copenhagen 1946–1950 Design: Georg Jensen 1905 · Blossom / Magnolia Collection · Silver 925 · Hallmark 1946–1950 · Monogrammed · Dedication 1950 · Width 55.5 cm · Weight 1,655 g
An oval two-handled service tray, model #2E, Blossom / Magnolia collection, in sterling silver 925, designed by Georg Jensen in 1905 and executed by the Georg Jensen Silberschmiede in Copenhagen between 1946 and 1950. Width with handles 55.5 cm · depth 33.7 cm · weight 1,655 g. Georg Jensen hallmark 1946–1950. Monogrammed and bearing an engraved dedication dated 1950.
At 1,655 g for a service tray, this exceptional weight attests to the quality of the solid sterling silver 925 used by the Jensen Silberschmiede for its major display pieces — the Blossom tray is one of the most imposing realisations of the collection. The floral Blossom scroll handles, hand-modelled and applied to the rim, give the piece its characteristic monumentality.
The engraved dedication of 1950 constitutes precisely dated provenance — the tray was presented on a particular occasion, most likely a wedding, a wedding anniversary or a professional distinction, in the tradition of major Scandinavian silverware offered as exceptional gifts. This dedication, far from diminishing the value of the piece, constitutes a historical document and an additional proof of authenticity.
The 1946–1950 production period is particularly sought after by collectors: this is the first generation of Jensen silversmiths trained after the Second World War, in a workshop that had maintained its artisanal production throughout the years of Danish occupation without interruption. Hallmarks of this period allow precise dating.
The Blossom collection — called Magnolia in Danish — is Georg Jensen's first hollowware creation: the 1905 teapot was the founding work that revealed his genius. The Blossom flatware pattern #84, introduced in 1919, is the most exclusive and labour-intensive in the entire Jensen production — entirely handwrought.
Upon his death in 1935, the New York Herald Tribune saluted Georg Jensen as "the greatest silversmith of the last 300 years." His works are held in the collections of the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen and MoMA in New York.
Further pieces from the Blossom / Magnolia collection are available in our gallery — #84 flatware, jam pots with Baccarat crystal, sugar bowls, creamers. Collectors wishing to build or complete a Blossom service are warmly invited to contact us directly.
