"Cabinet Cylinder Bookcase In Mahogany Louis XVI Period, Buffer Varnish"
Large cylinder desk surmounted by a bookcase furnished with mercury mirrors in moiré and speckled Cuban mahogany veneer, brass threads. The cylinder once opened reveals cardboard boxes sheathed in golden green leather with small irons. On the sides two leather-coated zippers for the work of the secretaries. He wears a molded turquoise blue marble. Parisian work from the end of the Louis XVI or Directoire period, around 1800. Created at the end of the reign of Louis XV, the cylinder desk is a piece of furniture with a mechanism, an evolution of the flat desk which by its lockable cylinder allows, once closed, to keep the work spread out on the desk confidential. Our cylinder desk opens with a sliding top, 3 drawers in the upper cabinet, surmounted by a cupboard lined with mercury mirrors, 3 small drawers in the cylinder (for pencils, feathers and inkwells) and 3 archive boxes (cardboard boxes) in cardboard wrapped in leather, under the belt 4 large drawers including a double drawer hiding a chest. Mounted on oak, our office is a very neat unstamped Parisian manufacture. Note the following details, signs of high quality: - veneered with a beautiful mahogany with a moiré and speckled effect - rich brass fittings - all the clover locks (complication created at the end of the 18th century to make the locks unpickable) - the cardboard makers which are a great originality - the luxury turquoise blue marble Our desk is a spectacular large model, rare in the library configuration, but it is not the "giant" model for all that. It takes the place of a large chest of drawers of 130 x 60cm. Very good condition, the buffer varnish has been cleaned and repolished by our cabinetmaker. The leathers and boxes were redone in the 20th century (leather cleared by the sun). the mercury ice creams are nicely pitted evenly. The marble is old, but probably brought back at a later date.
