19th-century Opium Kit Made Of Paktong, Jadeite, And Kingfisher Feathers
This beautiful opium-smoking set consists of a chatelaine held in place by a blue-enameled silver hook (with a Chinese hallmark on the back of the hook) featuring auspicious symbols.
A small chain beneath the hook holds a butterfly-shaped jadeite plaque that is engraved and set within a metal motif adorned with kingfisher feathers, forming a design of butterflies and lotus flowers.
Suspended from it by small chains are three instruments:
A small, pointed, lanceolate scraper.
A curved, pointed pair of forceps held closed by a sliding ring.
A spoon-shaped curette.
The handles of the instruments are carved and engraved.
The metal is paktong, the Chinese name for a copper-nickel alloy similar to nickel silver.
This technique of applying feathers is very ancient and was known as Tian-Tsui in imperial China.
A few feathers are missing; it has a beautiful antique patina.
IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, Qing Dynasty, China, circa 1890.
