Small Islamic glass bottle – 7th–8th century, archaeology, glassware, the East, perfume

Small dark green blown glass bottle dating from the early Islamic period (7th–8th century).

It features a globular body topped by a tall neck ending in a flattened rim. The body is punctuated by slight bulges that subtly enliven the surface of the glass. Traces of iridescence, particularly visible beneath the base and at the junction of the neck, attest to its age and its prolonged time buried in the ground.

Its silhouette follows a formal tradition inherited from the aryballes of Roman antiquity, whose forms have endured and evolved in the glassware of the Islamic world.

From the earliest centuries of Islam, Islamic glassmaking experienced a remarkable technical and artistic boom. Building on ancient Roman, Byzantine, and Sassanid traditions, it gradually developed its own distinct repertoire of forms and decorations. Workshops in the Near East, particularly in Syria and Mesopotamia, produced a wide variety of small vessels intended to hold perfumes, oils, and precious substances. The art of glassblowing allowed for a wide variety of shapes, while the subtle color variations and the play of light gave these objects their distinctive character.

With its elegant simplicity and the persistence of ancient forms in Islamic production, this small bottle stands as a fine testament to the history of glassmaking in the early Islamic period.

Dimensions: height 8 cm.
