"the Punch Drinker" Scottish Snuffbox
A Snuff box painted depicting a mischievous punch drinker.
He is seated in a red velvet armchair, with a punch bowl and its long spoon resting on a table beside him.
He holds his glass in his hand and makes a “shh” gesture by placing his finger to his mouth—we’ve been warned: don’t say he’s drinking!
This scene is hand-painted with great finesse, like a small painting.
The other sides are decorated with a red and green tartan pattern.
The entire piece is varnished.
The box is made of wood, lined on the inside with a layer of lead or zinc (worn) to prevent moisture.
Good condition, with minor dents and small cracks due to age.
Dimensions: 6 x 8 x 2 cm
19th-century Scottish craftsmanship
