Portrait Of A Gentleman In Jasperware, Late 18th Century
Portrait of a gentleman in a medallion, executed in jasperware.
This ceramic technique, popularized in part by the potter Joshua Wedgwood in the late 18th century, is characterized by white bas-relief decorations set against matte blue backgrounds.
Our medallion features a matte blue background against which the model’s profile portrait, rendered in a beautiful white, stands out.
He wears a curled wig, tied at the back with a silk ribbon whose folds and tips are clearly visible, as well as a lace ruff.
All these details are very finely modeled, with a near-translucent quality in places.
The back of the medallion is white. In fact, to save on colored oxides, which were very expensive, the potter dipped only the front side. The reverse side is therefore the clay in its natural state before dipping. This process was used in the late 18th century.
The medallion is in good condition. There are original micro-bubbles from firing in the blue clay.
Blackened wooden frame with brass trim
Medallion dimensions: 5 cm x 4.5 cm
Dimensions with frame: 15 cm x 9 cm
Dated to the late 18th or early 19th century
