Box With Bacchanalian Decoration In Martin Varnish, 18th Century
Superb lenticular box.
It is adorned with a miniature painted in vernis Martin, depicting a young, nude woman reclining in the arms of a man, on an animal skin and red fabric. The two lovers wear crowns of grapes, with fruit at their feet, and Cupid offering them bunches. The background features vegetation and ancient ruins upon which two doves are embracing.
This miniature is encircled with gold or tassel.
The box's structure is made of light brown composition lined with tortoiseshell.
A collector's label inside reads "Venque Martin painting by Caresme."
Good overall condition except for a small, barely visible chip around the edge (see photo 4).
