Hungarian painter and caricaturist Antal Biro was born on April 21, 1907, in Pozsony (now Bratislava) and died on September 12, 1990, in Székesfehérvár, Hungary.
Biro left Hungary at age 15, traveling through Transdanubia, Transylvania, Austria, and Finland before arriving in Paris in 1928.
He settled in Montparnasse and earned a living as a cartoonist for newspapers under the pen name “Bir.”
Beginning in 1932, he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

Encouraged by the Hungarian graphic designer Kàroly Koffàn, he returned to Budapest in 1940 and enrolled at the School of Fine Arts, where his teachers were Istvàn Szönyi and Lajos Nàndor Varga.
During the war, he worked in an artists’ colony alongside colleagues such as Judith Reigl, Simon Hantaï, Sandor Zugor, and Lipot Böhm.
The Hungarian National Gallery acquired one of his works.

In 1946, he received a scholarship to the Hungarian Academy in Rome.
In 1948–1949, he married in Sweden and taught painting there, in Kinna.
In 1950, he returned to Paris and moved into the famous collective studio “La Ruche,” where he welcomed Judith Reigl upon her arrival in France.
He regularly participated in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles.
In 1964, he settled on the French Riviera, in Menton, where he exhibited at the city’s biennials.

He returned to live in Hungary toward the end of his life.
