Large Butterfly Brooch With Faceted Steel Tips, 18th Century
This large butterfly with outstretched wings is entirely set with rivets made of cut and faceted steel tips of various sizes and shapes.
Now mounted as a brooch (a 19th-century adaptation), it most likely began its life as a hair ornament, as evidenced by the presence of a mounting for a hinge on the back.
No missing parts detected; the steel points are highly polished with no signs of oxidation.
