Kannon Kutani Moriage On A Dragon, Meiji Period, Circa 1890–1910

Artist: Kutani

Large antique Japanese sculpture in Kutani porcelain depicting Kannon, or Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, created during the Meiji period, circa 1890–1910. She stands majestically above clouds and waves, atop a sea dragon—her companion in this depiction of Kannon riding the dragon.

Her raised, open right hand forms the abhaya mudra, the “fear not” gesture, a symbol of comfort and protection. Her left hand holds a painted scroll, a symbol of Buddhist teachings.

The robes are richly decorated using the moriage technique, with raised enamels and scrollwork in sculpted slip creating a precious surface. Large, polished golden medallions are repeated on the shoulders, the forehead, and the back of the cloak; they represent the sacred nirin, a double halo of cosmic radiance evoking the sun and the moon.

The gold discs are covered with a delicate, dotted relief decoration known as “Kinchibu.” These reliefs protect the gilding from wear and catch the light, causing the halos to shimmer depending on the viewing angle.

Kutani depictions of Kannon holding a scroll are known from the Meiji period, but this piece stands out for its composition featuring a dragon and the density of its moriage decoration.
