An Exceptional Pair Of Herend Vit Sailing Boat Empire Vases, Circa 1960

Artist: Herend

A matching pair of large Herend porcelain vases, hand-painted in Hungary around 1960. The number 6401 refers to the vase’s shape, while VIT is the code for the “Sailing Boat” design.

The exact combination 06401-0-00 VIT is cataloged by Herend as a “Rare Masterpiece,” available by special order in its Limited Editions and Oriental Masterpieces collections.

The flared, fluted vases rest on square bases with four gilded lion’s paws, an Empire-style configuration that is particularly rare at Herend.

The 6401 is the large model in the Empire series, listed at 18 cm in height and 20.5 cm in diameter. The smaller Model 6402 measures only 13 cm in height, making this pair the larger size in the range.

Produced during the Hungarian socialist period, this pair dates from a time when Herend remained a major export manufacturer and produced complex, hand-painted porcelain in small batches for international markets.

The bases bear the blue “Herend Hungary Handpainted” mark, the painted designation 6401/VIT, the form number 6401 in intaglio, as well as other workshop marks.

Dimensions: The first vase weighs 1,503 grams, measures 19.2 cm in height, and 20.3 cm in diameter. The second vase weighs 1,476 grams, measures 19 cm in height, and 20.3 cm in diameter.

Condition: Both vases are in fantastic condition. The paint and brown gilding are particularly fresh and well-preserved, with no visible chips, cracks, restorations, or missing parts.
