An authentic and elegant English pedestal desk of the Victorian period (second half of the 19th century), of fine workmanship and great presence. Remarkable for the rightness of its proportions, the brilliance of its flame mahogany and the sobriety of its design, this desk has a presence full of character.

Built in solid wood with flame mahogany veneer, drawers and top in solid mahogany. The top is inset with an old red leather, now beautifully patinated, set off by a gilt-tooled border.

Nine drawers: three in the frieze and three in each pedestal, all fitted with keyholes and brass ring handles. The handles are old replacements; traces of the original mounts remain visible inside the drawers.

The lock of the central drawer bears the mark « Chubb's Patent, London, Maker to Her Majesty », with the number 719068. The other locks work with a single key; only the lock of the central drawer is not working. Eight bronze castors stamped « Clarke Loach Patent », in good working order. The castors can be removed on request.

The two pedestals stand on moulded plinths. The desk dismantles into three parts (top, left pedestal, right pedestal), in the English tradition.

Condition: good overall condition consistent with use. A few small knocks and minor wear to the veneer, consistent with age. On the right pedestal, slight old lifting of the rails has caused small localised cracks in the veneer. Shrinkage cracks in the wood inside the pedestals, not visible in use. The back shows a slightly uneven patina due to past exposure to sunlight. The desk has been checked by a cabinetmaker, treated against woodworm, and is ready to be put in place.
