Victorian Gold Secret Ring – So-called “poison” Ring – 19th Century
Victorian gold secret ring – So-called “poison” ring – 19th century
A rare and original yellow gold secret ring from the Victorian era, 19th century, featuring a particularly elaborate Neo-Renaissance design.
Description
The rectangular setting, finely chased with stylized plant motifs, scrolls, and volutes, forms a small hinged lid that opens to reveal a hidden compartment.
The shoulders of the ring are richly adorned with foliage motifs and scrolls in relief, accentuated by an antique patina that highlights the delicacy of the engraving.
This type of jewelry, traditionally known as a “poison ring,” could be used to store small substances, powders, perfumes, or precious mementos. Its historical name, however, does not necessarily indicate its actual use.
A particularly alluring piece of curiosity jewelry, representative of the Victorian taste for secret jewelry and mysterious objects.
