A remarkable ecclesiastical travel case, rectangular in shape, consisting of a wooden core entirely covered in brown leather, richly decorated with fine metalwork, gilding, and polychrome highlights.

Description

The lid features a prominent ecclesiastical coat of arms in its center. The shield, bearing a stylized crenellated tower with several levels, is surmounted by the cardinal’s galero, whose cords are terminated by thirty tassels—fifteen on each side—a heraldic arrangement corresponding to the dignity of a cardinal.
Behind the shield appears an archiepiscopal cross with a double crossbar. Taken together, these elements allow us to attribute this coat of arms to a cardinal-archbishop, whose identity remains to be determined.

The coat of arms is surrounded by leafy branches delicately accented with green and set within a rich decoration of gilded friezes and ornaments covering the leather. The patina and partial wear of the gilding now give the piece a particularly warm tone.

The interior retains its beautiful original green velvet lining, organized into twelve compartments, likely intended to hold the various items of a personal toiletries set. The underside of the lid is also entirely lined with green velvet.

The box retains its original lock with its key, as well as two movable brass side handles mounted on two plates.

The presence of these cardinal’s arms lends this box particular historical significance and attests to a commission intended for a high-ranking church dignitary.

Condition:

In good, authentic condition considering its age. Signs of wear, scuffing, minor losses, and imperfections on the leather, particularly along the edges and near the lock; wear on the gilding and interior trim. The piece retains a very beautiful antique patina and its original character.

Provenance of the prelate to be identified based on the coat of arms featuring a crenellated tower.
