Aït Ouaouzguite Berber Rug, 176 X 315 Cm, High Atlas, Hand-knotted Wool, Morocco, 1930–1950

Artist: Berbères Aït Ouaouzguite
Antique rug from the High Atlas, from the Aït Ouaouzguite, circa 1930–1950.
What sets it apart is its almost salmon-pink color, whereas rugs of this type are often based on a yellow ground.

It measures 176 cm wide by 315 cm long, not including the fringes.
This extraordinary design, notable for its colors, features two decorative borders that frame the center of the rug, which is woven in a flat, kilim-style weave.

It is a remarkable piece of work by the Berber women of this region.
Exclusively crafted by women on vertical double-warp looms.
These rugs are still largely dyed with vegetable dyes;
madder (taroubia) for red; black made from pomegranate leaves crushed with turnips, figs, and henna; indigo; and white wool obtained by bleaching the naturally ecru skeins.
These women use the Berber knot, and red is almost always the dominant color.
The designs are in yellow and black on a red background—traditional colors specific to this region—with splashes of orange, yellow, and green.
## Our piece is an exception to the rule!!! Hence its rarity

Our piece is in excellent collectible condition.

# Antique and modern Moroccan rugs are always dyed using natural methods, a practice that dates back to the conservation requirements established in the early 20th century by Marshal Liautey—an architect of the French Protectorate—who tasked Prosper Ricard with preserving Moroccan traditions and safeguarding and restoring the country’s cultural heritage.

# The diamond shape is a motif that frequently appears in decoration, ornamentation, hand-knotted rugs, and other artistic works—not only because of its decorative form, but also and above all for its symbolic meaning:
The immortality of the soul.

Antique Moroccan rugs are true works of art, woven like paintings

This rug has been professionally cleaned using eco-friendly methods.
