Pair Of Indo-persian Ceremonial Spontoons
This pair of spontoons is from Indo-Persian origin. These weapons can be dated from the 19thcentury.
The material used, bronze, excludes any use at war : these spears were intended for ceremonial use, likely made for palace guards.
TIP OF EACH SPEAR : the base consists of two birds facing each other, which are likely hoopoes. Above these birds is a chiseled floral motif, and finally the tip itself, whose unsharpened double edges are highlighted by a small chisel line.
Length of the tip alone, without the socket = 30.5 cm
In Persian tradition, the hoopoe is a symbol o fwisdom, protection, and clairvoyance = “I have learned what you have not yet learned,” said the hoopoe to Suleyman (Quran 27:22)
The tip is connected to the socket by a threaded shank thatscrews into it.
SOCKET OF EACH SPEAR: conical with 3 rings and a small chiseled design of interlaced ogives.
I left these halberd tips as is, but it’svery easy, if desired, to mount them on replacement shafts, made, for example, from curtain rods.
Ref 4Y-01XX Shipping costs: France €20, Europe €30
