Rare Insidious Dagger Disguised As A Net Needle – Genoa, 17th Century (18.2 Cm)
An extremely rare and fascinating example of a concealed weapon dating from the 17th century, of Genoese origin.
The object is skillfully disguised as a fishing tool, specifically a sail needle used for repairing and mending nets. This was a typical stratagem of the era, employed to circumvent the strict prohibitions on carrying weapons in the Republic of Genoa.
Handle: Finely covered in embossed and punched leather featuring geometric patterns of concentric circles; it is painted and adorned with visible traces of the original gilding.
Blade: Forged steel, characterized by a sturdy cross-section designed for thrusting (point strike) and ending in a lancet-shaped tip, featuring an eyelet (hole) to perfectly mimic the nautical tool.
Condition: Excellent, considering its age, with a splendid patina from age on both the leather and the steel. The piece is intact, with no invasive restorations.
Period: 17th century
Origin: Genoa, Italy
Total length: 18.2 cm
