Rear Admiral And Vice Admiral Model 1891 Sword
Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral's sword, Model 1891. With the decree of June 3, 1891, all doubt was completely dispelled regarding the characteristics of the sword adopted for general naval officers, as it is described in the text. The guard's ornamentation is similar to the motif adopted for generals on March 19, 1872, but the anchor naturally occupies the center of the latter. However, while the regulation distinguishes the sword guard of sailors from that of land-based officers—for the former, in principle, a ring chased with scallop shells and laurel and oak branches, for the latter a ring chased with laurel and oak, and for the former a central ring chased with thunderbolts on either side—all indications suggest that rear admirals and vice admirals received a sword with the branch motif of generals, undoubtedly considered more indicative of their status as general officers, and also consistent with the pommel featuring two winged half-thunderbolts, itself a prescribed feature. Finally, it should be noted that the sword of naval general officers remained in use in practice until 1940, as the decree of August 2, 1957, officially ended its wearing. Filigree tortoiseshell rocket. Tassel wrist strap with a thick twist in three-star braid. Blade length 69cm, scabbard length 72cm
