Rare Argentinian "verijero" Knife, Silver, Vermeil And Guitar Decoration, Circa 1900
An exceptional collector's item: unlike standard models with simple floral decoration, this example is a rare commissioned piece featuring a guitar in relief highlighted with vermeil, a powerful symbol of gaucho identity and the art of the "payadores" (itinerant poets). This Verijero-type knife is a remarkable example of Creole silversmithing ("Platería Criolla") from the Río de la Plata. Intended to be worn with prestige on the belt, it is distinguished by a level of craftsmanship far superior to typical productions. The handle and sheath are made of solid silver (rubbed tested) with finely repoussé and chased decoration. A guitar in relief and floral motifs are featured, all enhanced by perfectly preserved vermeil (gold on silver) highlights, creating a refined two-tone contrast. The 12 cm polished steel blade bears a cutler's mark stamped on the heel. It has a perfect fit, finished with a fan-shaped bolster, a signature of the craftsmanship. Argentine, late 19th century. The silver has retained a magnificent patina, the details are crisp, and the vermeil's luster remains in excellent condition. A high-end display piece for the discerning collector of international cutlery or South American art objects. Total length (with sheath): 24 cm. Knife length: 21 cm. Blade length: 12 cm.
