Artist: Sculpteur Romain Du Xviiie Siècle

Rome, 18th century

Complete details of this work can be viewed directly at the following - LINK -
A pair of wooden sculptures depicting two Roman centurions, notable for their austere elegance—highlighted by their full-figure composition—as well as for their three-dimensional finish.
The two sculptures are characterized by a stylistic model that allows us to attribute them to a woodcarver active in the early 18th century.
The figures, which are realistically rendered—especially in the splendid depiction of the garments, the rhythmic drapery, the definition of details, and the movement of the body—are part of the rich and successful tradition of Italian sculpture, particularly Roman, from the late 17th to the early 18th century.
This is a pair depicting two Roman soldiers, clad in classic armor complemented by a long cloak and a bell-shaped crested helmet, as they wield two long spears, standing atop a globe-shaped pedestal.
The works may have originally been part of a more elaborate composition, perhaps even of a religious nature, such as the numerous centurions that adorned a Calvary or a Way of the Cross.
Finally, their good state of preservation allows one to fully appreciate the quality of the carving. Signs of restoration are present on the spear, near the hand (the upper part is detachable).
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The sculptures come with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic sheet.
We arrange and organize the shipping of purchased works, both within Italy and internationally, using professional and insured carriers.
