FULL DETAILS AT THE FOLLOWING - LINK -

This is a high-quality wooden sculpture depicting a female “Moro,” an emblem of the Venetian sculptural tradition, portrayed in a standing position while holding a flower-adorned cornucopia in her hands. The figure stands on a base shaped like a draped cylindrical column, also made of wood, supported by four animal-shaped feet.

The work is made entirely of carved wood finished in black lacquer, with gold and silver details, and finished in polychrome.

The history of the “Mori” has its roots in the Middle Ages and then expanded in the 18th century—during the height of the wealthy maritime republic’s power—to all other areas of art, especially sculpture, giving rise to true masterpieces of the tradition.

As an emblem of the Serenissima’s power and a symbol of prosperity, wealth, and power—intended to celebrate the Republic’s supremacy over the Mediterranean Sea— the figure of the Moor thus became the principal ornament for the ballrooms of the Serenissima’s opulent halls, ranging from sculpted nude slaves to beautiful servants dressed in gilded and polychrome garments.

As our work attests, the creation of such sculptures did not end in the 18th century but continued into the following century, transforming its essence from a “status symbol” of the wealthy Venetian aristocracy to a decorative element in many European residences, becoming a sort of souvenir for wealthy foreigners who, after visiting Venice, wished to own a valuable object.

The piece is in good condition, with some signs of age and previous restoration, which do not detract from its beauty or structural integrity.
