FULL DETAILS (HERE)

A pair of Louis XV-style mirrors of Neapolitan manufacture, in carved and gilded wood, representing a highly valuable piece of furniture, typical of the Rococo style of the mid-18th century, though still influenced by Baroque elements, with plant tendrils and flowers that create a sinuous profile.

The mask motif is beautiful, appearing both on the cornice and the lower section; it symbolizes strength, nobility, and protection, and was often used in the furnishings of noble palaces to emphasize the family’s prestige.

These mirrors are characterized by a combination of sinuous lines, curls, “C”- and “S”-shaped volutes, and shell motifs (coquilles), combined with the grotesque charm of anthropomorphic faces.

The upper part is surmounted by refined floral motifs—another typical design from the decorative repertoire of this period—and the inner frame in which the mirror is set, flared and with contoured sides, along with the complexity of the details, highlight the grace and elegance typical of Neapolitan craftsmanship of this period, demonstrating the master carver’s excellent technical skill.

CONDITION: Considering the fragility and age of the two pieces, their condition is good. They have undergone restoration. These are antique mirrors silvered with mercury, exhibiting defects typical of the period, such as the characteristic oxidation spots caused by the passage of time (see detailed photos).
