"vieux Paris" Porcelain Cup And Saucer, Landscapes And Military Trophies, Circa 1820
Vieux Paris porcelain coffee cup and saucer, circa 1820. The cup, which tapers slightly toward the base, features a gilded interior and a loop handle. Its two painted panels depict a fisherman with his dog and a lumberjack felling a tree. The saucer features four rural scenes with bridges, trees, and cottages.
These landscapes evoke the imagery associated with Jean-Baptiste Pillement. They contrast with the orange-hued panels painted with ancient military trophies: a wyvern, a curved horn crossed with a polearm, a mask encircled by a laurel wreath with arms, and a standard-like trophy. No other porcelain decoration combining rural landscapes with this specific group of military symbols has been found in the museum collections and specialized literature consulted.
The set may evoke the classical idea that military success safeguards peace and rural life. It may have been part of a custom-made set, perhaps commissioned for a high-ranking military commander.
Parisian cups and saucers in the “litron” shape and featuring a similar Empire-style decoration are held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and dated to 1800–1810. This later pair reflects that refined Parisian taste. The saucer bears a small blue letter “C” under the glaze, a manufacturer’s mark.
Dimensions: Cup—weight 105 g; height 5.8 cm; width including handle 8.5 cm; diameter 6.1 cm. Saucer—weight 111 g; height 2.8 cm; diameter 12.6 cm.
Condition: Very good for its age. Slight wear to the gilding on the handle and rim of the cup; the painted scenes and interior gilding are very well preserved. The saucer shows slight wear on the gilding, while its landscapes and motifs on an orange background are in excellent condition. UV examination revealed no cracks, restorations, or retouching.
