Reliquary osculatory of the True Cross – Silver and brass – 19th century

Rare circular reliquary osculatory, made of silver and brass, enclosing a sealed case containing a relic of the True Cross (Ex Ligno Crucis D. N. J. C.).

Description

The silver frame features a relief decoration of a crown of thorns, a symbol of the Passion of Christ.
In the center, against a background of gilded fabric, a circular reliquary is surrounded by a gilded crown of thorns.
It contains a fragment of the Cross (Ex Ligno Crucis D. N. J. C.), set upon a white cross edged in red, accompanied by its handwritten tituli.

On the reverse, the reliquary retains its red threads and its ecclesiastical seal in red wax, showing signs of age-related cracking.

The piece is fitted with a brass ring handle on the reverse, allowing it to be used as an osculatory for the veneration of the relic.

Diameter: 8 cm.

Condition:

In good overall condition, with signs of use and age. Old red wax seal, cracked, with visible sealing threads.

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale pertains solely to the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction but are included as a courtesy due to their historical and cultural value.
