Large Cubist-style Bambara Statue From Mali
A superb Bambara or Bamana statue from Mali, representing their ideal of femininity; the exaggerated bust is a symbol of fertility and has no sexual connotations in Africa, unlike in the West!
It comes from the Belgian collection of Serge Sherr and is now part of my personal collection.
I’m a big fan of this type of tribal statue with a very modern design; here we see elements of minimalism and cubism. It’s a statue I really love, likely dating from the 1950s or 1960s. It shows some signs of wear, is quite imposing at 85 cm tall, and is perfect for a designer interior.
