Mangbetu Maternity Statue, Democratic Republic Of The Congo

The Mangbetu are known for their skull deformations, which they achieve by wrapping the baby’s head with cords before thebones have hardened, thus giving the baby a deformed, very elongated skull. The origins of this practice date back to ancient Egypt; they come from the region of Sudan and ancient Nubia and settled in the 19th century in the northeastern part of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
They are skilled potters and also create some wooden sculptures—which are rarely found from this period!
Height 52 cm and 55 cm withits base; beautiful antique patina, signs of wear and stains; first half of the last century.
