Gouro Mask, Zaouli Dance, Ivory Coast

Large Gouro mask, specially made for the Zaouli dance, a dance listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage; see here => DANCE
Crest mask depicting two figures fighting a snake/dragon, alluding to Mami-wata.
Good overall condition with a few minor restorations; height 50 cm not including the custom-made base. Mid-20th century.

The glare in the photos is due to the powerful lighting used to show the objects as clearly as possible.
From a very fine collection assembled by expatriates who lived in Africa in the 1950s and 1960s and later passed down through inheritance. It’s not always the case, but these cultured individuals took the time to carefully select their pieces on-site—they’re all superb, and I have several for sale.
Feel free to contact me for more information or to negotiate—it’s part of my job, and I’m happy to do it!
